In June of 1915 with the support of the Pennsylvania State Launderers Association, 85 industrial laundry employers formed an Association to collectively insure their employees from work place accidents under the newly written Workingmen’s Compensation Insurance law.
In December of that same year the Association incorporated under the name of Laundry Owners Mutual Liability Insurance Association and wrote its first policy on January 1, 1916. The Association was established as a Pennsylvania based Employer’s Mutual Company. In the early 1900’s Employer’s Mutuals were in abundance, however today, Laundry Owners Mutual is the only remaining Employer’s Mutual insurance company operating in Pennsylvania.
Our first office was located in the city of Pittsburgh and currently is located in a Pittsburgh suburb just a few miles east of its original location.
In December 1915 Edward G. Lang was hired to help spearhead the start up the company. The Association called upon Mr. Lang because of his insurance background and strong political ties. Mr. Lang was a local insurance agent specializing in fire liability and real estate, but as well he served as the Director of Public Safety for the City of Pittsburgh and sat on council for Allegheny County. He was also a Director of several banking institutions and local companies.
As the name implies Laundry Owners Mutual Liability Insurance Association at one time insured exclusively industrial laundry facilities and did so for a great number of years. However the industrial laundry industry had been changing and a new cleaning industry was emerging, dry cleaning; and in 1940 the Company wrote its first non-laundry based insurance policy, a dry cleaner/launderer.
Since that time our policyholder’s operations evolved and as a result we too evolved and now write a number of different industries. Though we have diversified what we write, we continue to remain focused on our main objective: providing low cost workers’ compensation insurance to our member policyholders with the highest level of personalized service.
The management of Laundry Owners Mutual, which spans across generations, remains committed to the mission and vision of this Company by providing high levels of proficiency to its policyholders, senior-levels of attention to policyholder’s needs, and as well offering active leadership and support within the insurance industry.
Our success and longevity is a result of our deeply rooted core principles, the very same principles that this Company was founded upon so many years ago, trust, honesty and integrity. Our philosophy which was built upon and around our policyholder has not changed either, to save premium dollars for our policyholders all while supplying unparalleled personalized service.
